At this time of the year we typically feel and express more gratitude for the ways God has blessed us. But take a look at the things for which we are usually grateful – food, clothes, home, car, health, income, etc. Do you notice what all those things have in common? They are all things that you can lose at any time. Even if you don’t lose them in this life, you will lose them one day because you cannot carry those things into eternity with you.
Our greatest gratitude should be reserved for our greatest gifts – the ones that we cannot lose. What do you possess that you cannot lose? What do you have that will last forever? Here are things that last forever: 1) a personal relationship and fellowship with God, 2) eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord, 3) God’s love, 4) The Holy Spirit who lives within the believer, and 5) family members who are saved and will be in heaven with you. We would be hard pressed to come up with anything else that lasts forever. These are the things for which we should be most grateful . . . unless you don’t have these things.
If you are missing these things in your life, they are available to you, but only when you turn from your sin and give your life to Jesus. Jesus said, “The thief (devil) comes to steal, kill, and destroy; but I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly.” You can have all the good things of this life and still miss the best thing – a saving relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ the Lord. It is through that relationship that we possess things we cannot lose, the things no one can take from us, not even death. These are the things we are to be most grateful for!
My prayer for you this Thanksgiving is that you will be able to give thanks for these things that you can never lose!
Happy Thanksgiving!
