Jesus told us when He left to go back to Heaven that He was leaving us His peace, not the peace of the world (John 14:27). What is His peace and how does it differ from that of the world’s peace? His peace is surpassing. The world’s peace is passing. The Apostle John wrote that the world and all that is in it is passing away (1 John 2:17). That would include any kind of peace the world has to offer. At best, the world’s peace only provides a temporary release from conflict, trouble, and sorrows. But soon, these find us again. And when they do, what happens to our peace?
Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble, but fear not, I have overcome the world.” And He precluded that by saying, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace” (John 16:33). Jesus gives us the key to surpassing peace – “In Me!” In the world – trouble, but In Me – Peace! In Christ, our peace does not pass, it surpasses our troubles.
The Apostle Paul wrote, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:6-7).
There it is – SURPASSING PEACE! Peace that surpasses our present understanding of our troubles. Peace that surpasses our fears, worries, and anxieties. Peace that surpasses any and all conflict! Is that the kind of peace you are enjoying? If not, stop right now and come (or come back) to Christ, for it is only IN HIM that you will have surpassing peace! After all, He is THE PRINCE OF PEACE!
“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His …. peace there will be no end” (Isaiah 9:6-7).
May you have a peace-filled Christmas and New Year!
